The wildly beautiful tangle of Cordillera Darwin occupies the southwest corner of Grande de Tierra del Fuego Island. It supports an ice cap of 890 square miles. A mighty ice sheet mantles this vast mountain ridge. Hiking onshore is for true adventurers only. in Tierra del Fuego, there are more penguins than human beings.
Punta Arenas has been the gateway to Patagonia for 150 years. More wildlife, scenery and history sit a shorter sail from its doorstep than almost any other port. Patagonia’s Cockburn Channel is feral and untamed. So much so that this wild waterway is best seen from the bridge. The towering mountains of Tierra del Fuego were ground into shape by Ice Age glaciers.
